The fantasy football playoffs start today in most leagues. If you’re struggling to make those final lineup calls, we’ve got you covered for advice.
At 9 a.m. central time, Anthony Maggio will be on 1500 ESPN talking fantasy football for an hour. You can stream that audio here. He’ll then stick around and do a chat at the website 1500espn.com.
You can tweet him questions at #1500blitz or @mplsmaggio. He gets to a lot of them on the show and hits the chat hard.
And of course you can find his player rankings here on Zoneblitz.com.
When the NFL releases its schedule sometime around NFL draft time, there are many games you can circle at that time and designate them as close to “must watch” television. Then there are games that develop as the season plays out, as teams you don’t suspect are ready to compete come out of the woodwork to challenge for playoff spots.
This week’s Game of the Week would be one of the latter. Nobody knew what to expect from New Orleans as they returned to full strength. Most probably thought they would be improved over a flawed 2012 version, but did anyone truly expect 9-3? Same with Carolina. Even a month into the season there were murmurs that Ron Rivera was close to losing his head coaching position.
Eight wins later, the Panthers are virtually assured of a spot in the playoffs. And now New Orleans and Carolina meet in the first of two match-ups that seem inevitably destined to crown the winner of the NFC South. This has quickly become one of the most compelling games on the calendar.

It’s fitting that last week was Thanksgiving because we gambled like a bunch of turkeys.
After discovering the mathematical error that had been artificially pumping up our respective bankrolls for 12 weeks, we found out we had much less to work with than originally thought. And now those wallets are even lighter.
I hit one of my games, so I salvaged a bit of a brutal week, but my brother missed all four of his predictions, dropping his bankroll from positive to negative for the first time in several weeks. Here’s where we stand:
Well, the end of week 13 put us three-quarters of the way through the season. As we head toward the home stretch, we all seem to be at least semi-catching on to what the NFL looks like in 2013.
Two of us hit 12 and the other two of us got 10 of 16 games correct. While there is some separation between the top and bottom of our standings, each of us is holding our own throughout the long, strange trip the NFL season typically becomes.
Here are the standings after week 13:
Week 13
Season
Andy
10-6
126-65-1
Tony
12-4
123-68-1
Maggio
10-6
116-75-1
Rich
12-4
112-79-1
Now that I’ve bragged up our proficiency, we’ll undoubtedly run into a weekend in which three quarters of the game end up in upsets. It happens all the time. Just when you start to think you’ve got things figured out …
So, here’s who we think will win in week 14: (more…)
Andy here. Hope you’re all enjoying your Thanksgiving weekend.
So … Tony may be having a better season than I am when it comes to picking against the point spread. But simple math skills? Not so much.
Truth be told, I wondered all along how, with as badly as I have performed, how I could be more than $1,100 ahead for the year. Turns out anyone could be a sports gambler when the casino is giving you back your original bet twice when you win.
Yes, Tony’s been paying out more than he should have. It’s a good thing he’s not working for a real casino or he’d be laying awake at night dodging Vinnie and Guido … again. So, below are the corrected totals. It’s a pretty dramatic difference – Tony goes from up a lot to up a little. And I go from up a fair amount to … ugly.
But what the hell. It was all pretend money anyway, eh?
Two weeks ago we featured the Chiefs/Broncos game in Denver as the Game of the Week. I thought there was a decent chance this week’s would be the rematch. But with both teams losing last week, an equally compelling game pretty easily overtook it.
Monday night’s contest between Seattle and New Orleans features the veteran superstar QB taking on the second-year budding superstar. It’s Marshawn Lynch and it’s Jimmy Graham. It’s two solid defenses … and, with Seattle sitting at 10-1 and New Orleans at 9-2, it’s a game that could determine home field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs.
Bill Stephens, a writer with SaintsGab and Nick Ashbourne, editor of 12th Man Rising stopped by to share their thoughts on how their teams will fare in one of the season’s most important games so far. (more…)
