I dunno … good notes Tony, but I don’t consider it as much a classic as “AI” does … simply another tale of two halves. If anything, the Packers should be disgusted letting this game slip away–to this day, Packers fans are upset with HC Mike McCarthy’s conservative game plan–but while they kept Wilson under wraps, Lynch’s running would help the comeback happen.
The Legion Of Boom wasn’t the same defending their championship. Injuries and fatigue plagued them this postseason. Had the defense been the same as the previous year, I don’t believe the Packers would have scored to tie it in the final minute. Once Brady threw four TDs in the SB, the Legion Of Boom moniker basically ended, though the defense was statistically strong in 2015, 2016.
Why didn’t the defense stay great? Simple … the defensive stars got paid and they lost their edge.
Sad really, because not only could they have made another SB but could have been compared with the great defenses of all-time. Instead, like the Bears of 1985, a one-year flop. This is why I don’t believe Carroll is one of the all-time great coaches.
He wasted a very talented team roster from 2012-2018.
Agree 100% Brian–I think McCarthy and Carroll are two of the most overrated coaches of this generation.
I know I regularly post in the Hall of Fame section I’m just going to say this as a former Seahawks fan even though the greatest era of Seahawks football ended with Russell being traded and Pete being forced out I think it’s fair to say the greatest era of Seahawks football really ended that tragic February night in 2015
I will admit, I might have been a little harsh on The Legion Of Boom.
Maybe it was their postseason losses, giving up 28 pts to Brady and NE in the 2014/15 SB, another 24 pts to Carolina in the first half–a 31-24 loss–in 2015/16, and another 34 pts to Atlanta in a 36-20 loss in the 2016/17 playoffs. They didn’t go in 2017.
However, their team defensive excellence started in 2011, with a mixture of rookie and veteran defensive talent. For me, it’s all about pts-per-game and the Seahawks were 7th overall out of 32 teams.
The Legion Of Boom hit it’s stride in 2012 going 1st in scoring defense but unfortunately, gave up a last minute FG in a loss to Atlanta in the playoffs.
Of course, the monstrous season in 2013 not only finishing #1 in scoring defense but dismantling the best scoring offense in history, with Manning and the Broncos.
Right or wrong, I felt that SB domination of Denver, and the arrogance and defiance of that Seattle defense, changed how the NFL moved forward.
Goodell as Commissioner, not to mention the Competition and Rules committee, were determined to use fines and legislation to scale back defenses, continue to outlaw vicious hitting and give QBs and offenses in general more of an advantage. Ever since then, defenses have been handcuffed. The game has suffered for it, though younger fans stay tuned in more than ever.
In 2014 and 2015, despite postseason losses, including and exciting SB, The Legion Of Boom was still the #1 scoring defense in the league and #3 in 2016 before missing the playoffs in 2017.
Not too shabby, but from that SB loss to NE, they never could regain their postseason dominance.
Bobby Wagner will be a first ballot HOF player, but Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas will also be voted in, down the road. Had Cam Chancellor not had injuries, he might have made the Hall himself and one of the original stars of the defense, Brandon Browner, helped beat this team for NE in the SB( At the time I wished the Seahawks had never released him but he had off the field issues)
Is their place in defensive history secure? I believe so, but the greatest defenses won multiple championships and like both versions of Doomsday in Dallas, the Purple People Eaters, The Fearsome Foursome and the Bears defense from 84-88, they fall short. They will still be remembered, especially for that great 2013 season, but fans can only wonder how far they could have gone ?
