And then there was one. Mike Nugent’s failed FG attempt as time ran out not only left Carolina and Cincinnati tied, but it knocked John Vomhof Jr. out of our double-elimination Survivor Pool. So that means, embarrassingly enough, that after just six weeks, Anthony Maggio was the last man standing.
He’ll continue on making picks to help you out with your selections. The other three of us losers are going to start a consolation round — we’ll start from scratch with the ability to pick any team we want. Anthony will stick to picking from the teams that are still available to him. The rest we’ll kind of make up as we go.
Maggio: Record: 6-0
Teams used: NY Jets, Green Bay, Atlanta, San Diego, New Orleans, Denver
New England over NY Jets: I never would’ve thought I’d have won a double-elimination survivor pool after six weeks, but here we are. Hopefully if you’ve been using us for making picks, you’ve been going with my suggestions. And if so, I’ll keep it up as to hopefully help you continue to navigate sans seven teams, including now the New England Patriots. I bailed on Tom Brady just days before he started his two-game turnaround, so now hopefully he won’t pull the rug out from under twice in less than a month. Not having Stevan Ridley in the run game isn’t ideal, but New England should be able to handle the Jets at home.
Consolation round (single elimination)
John: Record before eliminated: 4-2
Arizona over Oakland: I’m going back to my old “always bet against Oakland philosophy,” even though I honestly don’t feel as confident about it now as I did earlier in the season. David Carr and the Raiders have been playing better of late, but the Cardinals are the better all-around club, especially with Carson Palmer back from injury.
Andy: Record before eliminated: 2-2
Seattle over St. Louis: I think the Seahawks are bored. I think they’re still the best team in football. But they have to start proving it. If a home loss to Dallas last week doesn’t serve as a wake up call, this team is going to have a hard time making the playoffs, much less repeating. The run starts this week.
Tony: Record before eliminated: 0-2
New England over NY Jets: Tom Brady and the Pats are playing like a team possessed. So are the Jets—just a different kind of possessed. Pats win in a rout. Right? I couldn’t possibly go 0-3 in this thing, could I?
