Back by popular demand, err, because we need to fill space, is our second annual survivor pool.
Which is kind of funny, if you think about it, because last year all but one of us were out by week four.
Anthony Maggio won. He actually went 16-1 on the season. The rest of us … meh. Nonetheless, here are our picks for week one, with explanations below.
This Week’s Pick | |
Maggio | New England |
Vomhof | Green Bay |
Andy | Green Bay |
Tony | Green Bay |
Rich | NY Jets |
Explanations:
Anthony Maggio – Fantasy editor
There’s honestly not a whole lot out there I love in Week 1, which usually has at least one exploitable matchup early before we’ve seen any team play when the games matter. But thanks in part to a lot of home games by teams I’d otherwise be happy to pick to lose (Buffalo, Jacksonville and St. Louis, most notably), I’d rather take Tom Brady in his triumphant return from non-suspension over a Pittsburgh team missing its starting center, running back, and No. 3 wide receiver playing in a hostile environment.
Andy – Co-founder, editorial director
I don’t care that weird things happen or that this is a division rivalry that often results in throwing out records and common sense. Jordy Nelson’s injury doesn’t matter to me here. The Packers are good, Aaron Rodgers is arguably the best QB in the game and he’s going against a bad defense with a completely rebuilt secondary.

Nothing like a rivalry game where anything can happen right out of the gates, but I just can’t see Jay Cutler and the Bears overcoming the offense of the Packers, even with Jordy Nelson hurt. Aaron Rodgers is too good, and the Bears defense is too suspect, for the Bears to keep up. It hurts to use the Packers right away, but I need to last longer than last year…which is why if I was in Vegas, I’d probably post this and head straight to the sports book to bet the Bears on the moneyline.
John Vomhof Jr. – Senior contributing writer
I wanted to be ballsy this week, I really did, but I just couldn’t pull the trigger. After thinking long and hard about the Jets (at home) over the Browns, I decided to play it safe and just live to fight another day. The Pack should easily roll past their division rival Bears, even without Jordy.
Rich – Contributing writer and publisher and editor of SouthernMinn SCENE magazine
IK Enemkpali did the Jets a favor by putting Geno Smith down, because Ryan Fitzpatrick gives them a better chance to win. Cleveland is terrible, whether they have Josh McCown, Sober John Manziel or Bernie Kosar at quarterback.
