I don’t want this post misinterpreted. I’m not arguing in favor of physical violence against anybody nor do I have any respect for thugs who acquire things not through buying them but by beating the hell out of their fellow man and taking it.
But what in the hell was Javon Walker thinking in Las Vegas early Monday morning hanging around with $3,000 in cash and more than $100,000 worth of jewelry?
Various media outlets are reporting details surrounding the events of the evening that might have led to Walker getting his beating. Among other allegations is that Walker was at the Body English nightclub inside the Hard Rock Café into the wee hours of the morning and that he may have had another party earlier in the weekend where he engaged in spraying champagne in the direction of other patrons.
USA Today is citing a Las Vegas Review-Journal story reporting that Walker had a $15,000 champagne party at the Tryst club at the Wynn casino. According to that story, Walker suffered “significant” injuries during the robbery including an orbital fracture, otherwise known as a broken eye socket.
Now, I enjoy visiting Las Vegas. I’ll be hanging out there during the first week of the NFL season come September putting a few bucks down on the Blackjack tables and the opening week’s games. And while I’m no more than a middle-class guy playing with a few bucks set aside for enjoyment, I begrudge no one the opportunity to do whatever they see fit with their money. If Walker wants to waste $15,000 worth of champagne spraying it rather than drinking it, more power to him.
On the other hand, Pro Football Talk cites yet other sources saying similar activities with champagne on New Year’s Eve a couple years ago might have been a precursor to the murder of Walker’s former Denver Broncos teammate Darrent Williams. And he may have been spraying people who really didn’t go to the club to get sprayed.
Vegas isn’t really the place where I would want to be screwing around like that anyway. I’ve never had any problems out there, knock on wood. But it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure that in a city full of money there might be a few hoodlums out there looking for people from whom they can extract a few bucks.
I’ve never been a fan of Javon Walker. When healthy he’s a decent enough receiver, but he always seems to be unhappy, no matter how much money he’s making or how many years he has remaining on his contract.
He always seems to be amidst a major controversy and he’s had three knee surgeries while missing about every other season due to injury.
He had a breakout season in Green Bay with 89 catches for 1,382 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2004, tore up his knee in week one of 2005 and held out in 2006, essentially forcing a trade to Denver.
Then, after playing all of eight games and catching 26 passes last season, he once again whined his way out of town, inexplicably receiving a six-year, $55 million contract from the Oakland Raiders this off-season.
So he has the cash to toss around. But apparently not the common sense to either do so discreetly or to surround himself with a posse that can protect him. I wish him a full recovery and hope he’s around in fantasy drafts … for some other team to take. But he really may want to think about toning it down a bit.
