Tiki Barber interviewed his heir as running back for the New York Giants tonight for Sunday Night Football on NBC. During the short piece it sounded as though he wanted to take credit for the success enjoyed thus far by Brandon Jacobs.
He laughingly accused the big Southern Illinois back of stealing a bunch of his touchdowns, to which Jacobs said “I had a lot of fun doing that.”
The interview appeared to be going along good-naturedly, as Tiki razzed Jacobs about winning the Super Bowl without him. Jacobs told Barber he wished his mentor had been there and when Tiki asked for his ring, Jacobs retorted: “I’ll let you borrow it sometime.”
Then it got a little weird. I wasn’t 100 percent certain how serious Barber was when he started taking he took credit for educating Jacobs. “I taught you everything you I know,” he said. “Taught you to be tough, fast, agile …”
Jacobs nodded good-naturedly and did appear to truly respect Barber throughout the piece. But I was left wondering just how much the former running back-turned-media guy thought he did for Jacobs, who while raw during his rookie year as Barber’s understudy, clearly possessed a ton of talent.
Jacobs was a battering ram, fun to watch from day one. He had some skills Barber could only have dreamed of having. Barber was a tough back – I won’t take that away from him. But I never saw him flatten defenders like Jacobs does now – and did while Barber was teaching him everything he knows.
Jacobs and Barber appeared to get along well during the piece. But if he thinks Jacobs wouldn’t have been a successful NFL running back without his tutilege, Barber may need to take an ego pill.
Tiki did not say “I taught you everything you know”. Tiki said “I taught you everything I know” as in Tiki said I tried to be your mentor when you got here and offered all my knowledge to you.
Please go back and watch the interview again, and how are you going to write an article based on a quote you misheard?
Lool..i caught onto that too
It was rudeeeeeeeee of Tiki to take credit for “All he knows”
BJ is a great player and Barber was just being an assfuck.
Even though Brandon smiled at everything he said, you can tell the smiles were forced out of respect.
And Tiki is just one awkward ass interviewer.
Artan,
You caught me on the I vs you mistake. But I stand by the point of the post. After watching it again, Tiki says he taught Jacobs how to be fast, how to be agile, all while sporting a strange grin still made me hope Tiki didn’t get hurt while patting himself on the back.
Then in the next video clip, Tiki acknowledges that even though Jacobs was/is 60 pounds heavier than Tiki was, Jacobs was still the faster back.
Tiki contradicts himself in spots throughout the interview and just comes off … weird at times. Aisha described it as awkward – I agree.
And this is to take nothing away from Tiki as a player – he was a fantastic player. But watching him interview people can, at times, be a bizarre experience.
Tiki did come off as jealous, there was little doubt of that…but lets be real as a member of the media and a short time away from his last carry, it his job to show us what we already know… that’s what the media renforces time and time again, especially a bad journalist… Tiki is in fact very jealous…which makes him more pathetic than I already knew he was…think about it, he gave us a story, that he feels he deserves a ring that wasn’t offered…what a sad and selfish person…no wonder he so contencious on the NBC set with Jerome…jealousness is quite ugly on that beautiful face…jerome is a good person and his postitive karma rewarded him with one of the great stories in NFL history…poor Tiki my heart bleeds, don’t wait for the call from Canton, it won’t be coming…That’s the question I’d love to ask him….
