Well, the only reference to Brett Favre on the SunHerald.com Web site as of this morning is for a book about the signal caller selling through something called the South Mississippi Store, so perhaps the caller to KFAN-AM Thursday afternoon was a crackpot.
Or he does work in classifieds at the paper but he jumped the gun in calling a radio station in Minnesota to say Favre wants to play for the Vikings.
The more I thought about it the more bizarre that report looked anyway. Whether Favre comes back or not, the Packers certainly aren’t going to trade him to Minnesota. And if it gets out publicly that he wants to play for the Vikings it could lessen his chances of getting released, as well, I would imagine.
And in the bigger picture, if Favre does want to play he probably should stick with the Pack anyway. There aren’t many teams out there that have a better shot at the Super Bowl and if you are as close as Green Bay was last year, you go with the players that have the best chance to get you there.
That player is Brett Favre, not Aaron Rodgers. Sure, it’s been said that the Packers want to move on and look to the future. Understandable perhaps. There’s also been talk that Rodgers would walk after the 2009 season if Favre comes back or that his feelings might be hurt.
Well, so be it. Let him walk. Let him sulk. There aren’t any feelings in football and if the Packers think they have a chance to go to the Super Bowl they should welcome Favre back with open arms. The Super Bowl trumps all in the NFL. It’s the ultimate prize and real opportunities to bring home the Lombardi trophy are few and far between.
The Packers chances of going and winning under Rodgers’ leadership fall dramatically versus their hopes with the legend. That’s not a rip on Rodgers – I have my doubts about him as a long-term player, but he very well may end up being a fantastic quarterback. But teams rarely succeed to any fantastic degree with a first-year starter at the helm.
And for that reason alone, if Favre really does want to come back? He should do so with the green and gold.
