UPDATE: Apparently this was an April Fools Joke that just didn’t get publicized until April 2nd. I think the joke should be on the Seahawks–make them play in green! Upon further review, it should have been obvious it was a joke–the Seahawks are amongst the teams advocating the annoying trend of monochrome uniforms, so for this to have been real, they would have needed green pants as well. That would have been AWESOME!
The Seatlle Seahawks new alternate jerseys were leaked on Deadspin this morning–presumably not a late April Fools joke. I have to agree with Deadspin as to the jersey’s being hideous–why would you put the blueish-grey stripes on a beautiful green jersey like that?
I’m not a real fan of the trend of jamming so many blocks of colors and Nike swooshes onto jerseys–most of the jerseys teams are switching to these days are hideous, and belong in the arena league (where the “modern” look seemed to originate).
But I actually kind of like the green Seahawks jersey–it would be better without the blue sleeves–but then again, I also list the Buccaneers old creamsicle orange jerseys in my top 5 all time football uniforms.
Tony’s Top 5 “Ugly” Football Uniforms:
5. Houston Oilers powder blue jerseys
4. Buffalo Bills red helmet, blue facemaks combo
3. New England Patriots red jerseys with Pat the Patriot
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers creamsicle orange jerseys and winking pirate…
1. Orlando Thunder flourescent green jerseys–had to be painful for opponents to look at during games.
What are some of the other best all time football uniforms out there?
I agree. Those jerseys are very ugly. They are too green for football.I really doesn’t match the helmet.
I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I wouldn’t presume to be more correct than anyone else. But I definetely know what I like . :) That said it’s funny how wrong some of these people get it. Of course if you don’t like a color there’s no hope.
I actually really like Seattle’s alternate lime green but agree that the sleeves should be changed. They look like a baseball jersey. Glad they didn’t copy the Jets green. I hope they use the alternate!! Different is good!! Why have all of these hi-def TV’s if we want a bunch of blah colors? Sports are entertaining so colors should be OK. Did you see golf’s John Daly today? Lime green and more at the British Open. :)
Tony, some of the uniforms you hate I actually like. What’s wrong with the old luv u blue Oilers ? Just the color? I think it’s on of the most memorable and best in NFL history.
Thankfully some folks are figuring it out and are going back for the future. Like the 49ers going back to the brighter (cherry) red which served them well in their SB years. The Jets, Chargers and Giants did a great service to their fans IMO by going back to their “old” uniforms. People have too often messed with a good thing. Can you imagine the outcry if the Steelers or Cowboys changed their helmets?? :) I was surprised Minnesota made changes even though not huge not wise IMO. Personally I hate those big white side swirls/stripes (don’t know what to call it). I only mention IMO they’re messing with one of NFL’s best.
Additionally, I don’t know why there’s a desire to go to darker shades like the aqua of the Dolphins or the burnt orange of the Longhorns. Maybe they percieve it as tougher or more intimidating to their opponents?? What I don’t like today is when the uniform color is the same or monochrome from head to toe. Some uniforms are so blah now. Can you say borrrring. They should ban!
I suppose in most cases when teams lose that encourages uniform changes.
Here are teams that IMO made the worst changes to their uniforms over the last 40 years (not by rank):
Buffalo Bills – Original new uniform change was good but now the uniform color and style sucks!
Seattle Seahawks – They went from bad to horrible!! I hate the dominance of this pukey dark blue/green from head to toe. Yuk! They needed to make a change.
Tampa Bay Bucs- Another team that went from bad (only because lots of people hate the orange) to horrible!! I hate that color they call pewter!! All they needed to do was change the shade of orange IMO. They could of kept my that cool looking pirate logo.
Atlanta Falcons – They ruined a good uniform! Too much one color (black!!). Can’t see helmet logo well. The red, white and black was cool.
Houston Texans – I know many hate the name but it makes sense historically and being a Texan I like it. IMO the only thing they got wrong is the helmet. It should be white with the same blue and red logo because it’s too hard to see logo with dark background IMO.
Cinncinati Bengals – I’m not saying they they should go back to their old uniforms but they certianly could of done better. I guess I could live with the helmet (took a long time to adjust to) but they need to get rid of the orange except as a stripe.
Finally, for what it’s worth I’m a long time Houston baseball fan that loved the Astros’ old uniform that is routinely bashed. Everyone else is wrong. Lol!!
Tony – The Seahawks green uniforms was an April Fools joke, unfortunately. And my list of Top 5 ugly uniforms was meant as a list of uniforms typically considered ugly that I actually like–so I like the Oilers powder blue, the Bucs creamsicle orange, and the Orlando Thunder. I actually own a throwback jersey of Derrick Brooks, and a throwback of Kent Hrbek in the old Twins powder blue (my favorite ugly baseball uniform).
I almost bought a Nolan Ryan Astros throwback in the old rainbow style–but it was too expensive.
Cool. Oh, I thought the lime green was an option in the future. I saw the Dolphins alternate once and I swear it would be hard to stay a fan. Lol!
I loved how “Herbie” played the game!! The 1987 Twins are one of my all-time favorite baseball teams. If Bert doesn’t make it this year we should stampede Coopertown.
I also lived and died with the play of the 80’s Astros. IMO, one of the better team not to make it to a World Series.
One last thing, I’m stunned on seeing that Kent Hrbek never received a Gold Glove Award. This is someone known for great defensive play. :( Oh well.
Yeah, Hrbek was amazingly good defensively–especially given his size–but most of his best years were the same years that Don Mattingly was at the top of his game.
