Now that it doesn’t matter, we’re on a roll. Five different picks, five wins last week. If you’re still alive, maybe it is time to start paying attention to us.
Here are our winners in week 16:
Tony: San Diego
Vomhof: San Diego
Andy: San Diego
Maggio: Pittsburgh
Rich: San Francisco
And here is why:
Tony: (Previous picks: Seattle, Carolina, Dallas, Cincinnati, New England, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Minnesota, Kansas City, Baltimore, Miami, NY Giants, San Francisco, Detroit, Green Bay) I thought I was going to go Oakland against the Colts, but I realized I had the Chargers available, facing the 0-14 Browns. If the Browns are going to avoid going 0-16, this is the one they’ve got to win—I’m not sure they’ll have a chance against Pittsburgh next week.
Vomhof: (Previous picks: Seattle, Carolina, Miami, Arizona, New England, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Minnesota, Dallas, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, NY Giants, Green Bay, Atlanta, Houston) Yeah, yeah. The Chargers are only 5-9. They’ve have lost three straight and four of their last five. I know. But they hung tough against the Raiders last week and shouldn’t have any trouble blowing past the winless Browns.
Andy: (Previous picks: Seattle, Carolina, Miami, Carolina, New England, Pittsburgh, Denver, Kansas City, Dallas, Baltimore, Arizona, NY Giants, New Orleans, Atlanta, Buffalo) If Cleveland is going to avoid 0-16, this is the week they will do it. San Diego is up and down. But the Browns have yet to win a game. And the 49ers are playing the Rams, so there is no picking against either of those teams this week. Cross my fingers and hope the path to perfection stays intact.
Maggio: (Previous picks: Arizona, Detroit, Carolina, Washington, Oakland, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Tennessee, Kansas City, Baltimore, New England, New Orleans, Green Bay, Atlanta, Seattle) The Steelers are a different team at home. And though I’ve got a ton of love for the Ravens defense, they’ll either be without Jimmy Smith or with a hobbled Jimmy Smith, and I don’t think Baltimore will be able to keep pace on the scoreboard. I actually had a tough time this week deciding between Pittsburgh and Dallas, though, so if you already used the Steelers then I think the Cowboys are another fine option.
Rich: (Previous picks: Los Angeles, Seattle, Arizona, Dallas, New England, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Minnesota, Green Bay, Baltimore, Tennessee, Buffalo, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami) Nothing like guaranteeing a win out of a 1-13 football team. On the road. In December. This is no ordinary December road game, however. There will be no snow for this game in Sunny Southern California, nor will there be any playoff repercussions. These two teams are playing for absolutely nothing. Well maybe there are a few guys on the Rams who would like to see John Fassel named permanent head coach, but that’s negligible. The 49ers sure as hell aren’t playing for Chip Kelly to keep his job. Kelly himself might not even be trying to keep his job.
So, in this lowliest of all loser-bowls, I will select the 49ers as my guaranteed win of the week, mostly because I’ve used every home team in this pool already. I do believe that the Kaepernick/Hyde combo can find a way to put up a few more points than the Goff (Mannion?)/Gurley combo, as it is my sincere opinion that the Rams defense has already packed it in for the year.
Don’t bet the farm on this game. More importantly, don’t even watch this game. It will be boring, filled with penalties, miscues, apathetic LA football fans and the same tired commercials you’ve been watching since Thanksgiving. You can certainly find a better way to entertain yourself on Christmas Eve. And if you need football to escape from the rest of your family, this will be the game people would question you about. (“Why are you watching this? Come back out and help us with the 2,000-piece goldfish jigsaw puzzle!”) Look for Miami & Buffalo, Atlanta & Carolina or Minnesota & Green Bay.
Besides, I already told you that San Francisco would win.
