Wow.
Eight picks into the draft and the Zoneblitz mock draft is shot.
The New York Jets, as many expected, moved up to make a play at a quarterback. The shock to me is how little it took for them to move up from 17 to 5 in order to grab Mark Sanchez, the USC underclassman. The Jets give up the 17th pick, a 2nd round pick and three decent-at-best players – must’ve been guys Eric Mangini, former Jets and new Browns coach, liked while he was in the Big Apple.
I know the “trade chart” that puts point values on all the draft positions has gone out the window with the ridiculous money the top six or seven guys get every year. But as a rebuilding organization, the Browns need to do better than adding just a second rounder and three likely backups to move down that far.
Then the Oakland Raiders shocked everyone once again by leaving Jeremy Maclin and Michael Crabtree on the board to grab Darrius Heyward-Bey, who reminds my brother a lot of another wide receiver that went at the seventh position a few years back, one Troy Williamson.
So far, in my eyes, the Jets are the big winner. They get their potential franchise quarterback without giving up what they should have had to. And the Raiders, who were mocked last year on Zoneblitz and elsewhere for their ridiculous free agency spending, have managed to again become a laughingstock. Heyward-Bey may very well become a very solid NFL wide receiver. But they could have gotten him several picks later.
J!-E!-T!-S! WHAT IS GOING ON?!
So much talent still on the board. Oher. Wells. Matthews. Maualuga. Davis. The Vikings can’t still be thinking Harvin, can they?
I hate Brad Childress.
What do you guys think of Mark Sanchez?
Boy Minnesota’s Coach just rolled the dice on his job by taking Harvin. Jared Allen paid off. Moss was so so. Childress just doesn’t seem like much of a enforcer. I would of taken a character guy. I like Minnesota and hope it works out.
I give Sanchez a 50-50 chance of being a long time starter. That’s probably better than average. QB’s are always risky. I think they needed a QB and they took the next best one. They must have Zero confidence in Clemens to take a QB and pass up on a more sure thing.
I only hope.
I think the Jets did pretty good in the Draft. They got a QB, which is what we needed. We need a long term QB.
We got a RB. Thomas Jones is 31 years old and probably won’t be around next year. So, we bring him in and we are set.
And we got a OG. I like that pick b/c Alan Fancea is getting old, so this player can give him a breather.
As far as a grade, I will give them: B+
I liked Sanchez better than Stafford, and I think Sanchez lands in a better spot. Decent to solid OL to block for him, running game to help him, and WR that are capable enough. If you guys get him signed on time and in camp, you should be good.
Now the only problem is that the whole AFC East is looking really, really solid.
Bottom line is the Jets did great if they hit on the QB. I think they had to do it if they could.
I think the Raider hit on WR. Louis Murphy :) He’ll be a starter IMO. They blew 1st rd pick. Knowing they got Florida’s speedy Murphy just think of all the great players they could of got at #7. Game has past Al Davis by.
I’m wondering about the Great Bill Parcells too. Miami’s draft was shaky at best with Sean Smith -S being the best pick IMO. They could of passed on Pat White and went for Smith who some had going in the 1st rd than at #56 taken a really Lineman or LB. They were set on White and IMO ESPN scared them by saying Belicheat had interest. I doubt it.
.
Brad, that said I’d give the Jets an A grade overall and A+ for Sanchez pick..
