Somehow the official announcement got past us, but I picked up on an article today regarding the effort to put the stripes back on the San Francisco 49ers new uniforms, and I have to say, it’s nice to see a team change their uniforms using their past as a guide, rather than using Nike and the Arena League as their inspriation.
I never understood why the 49ers added the drop shadow to the numbers on their uniforms in the first place–and apparently, by eliminating, the new uniforms are lighter now as well. Maybe the uniforms will help Mike Singletary get more out of his players?
Hopefully this will start a trend in the league, and we will see a return to classic uniforms for more teams, for more than just 1-2 “throwback” games a year. The Vikings, in particular, always look way sharper in their classic duds with stripes on the sleeves and grey facemasks.
We can only hope that the Titans, Bills, Seahawks and other teams that have fallen in love with pastel and monochrome arena league style uniforms will follow. Before they start putting ads on the uniforms.
It took them TWO YEARS to design that? One can only hope that Jerry Jones’ staff can use some of that PSL money to help bring their design down to only 18 months. Or maybe Congress can make some stimulus money available.
I agree with you Tony. I don’t like the move to a modern or streamline look. I especially don’t think the winning teams that have been the face of the NFL for many years should change their look. Minnesota was one of those teams. I loved the old purple uniforms. I liked it when the purple was a lighter shade. It seems like most of the teams have gone darker. I think Denver was the first to add the vertical stripe under the arm. Minnesota and Arizona have it now.
Titans, Bills, Seahawks are all realitively new uniforms. I’m probably the only one who liked the old silver Seahawks uniforms. Now they are so dark and ugly IMO. The Atlanta Falcons look went south too with all black. You can barely tell what the logo on the helmet is supposed to be with only an white outline of a falcon. The Titan’s baby blue uniforms has actually grown on me over the years. I like their helmets without the center stripe. The Bills used to have a cool helmet with a red buffalo standing on a white background.. Now the buffalo is in somekind of jetstream.
Both New York teams were smart by going back to their old uniforms after having ugly lettering for years. The Giants even won two SB’s and changed back. I hope the Miami Dolphins never change. I’ve seen their proposed new helmet years ago and thank God they haven’t changed. A few years ago they curled up the dolphins’ lip to look meaner. How about the guys in the uniforms playing a little meaner? That would be a good change!! Lol!!
