At least Brett Favre had the good sense to not overshadow Saturday’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The Green Bay quarterback, or not, however, has reportedly landed in Green Bay as of Sunday evening and the team has now decided there will be an open competition during training camp between him and Aaron Rodgers.
“In this election year we’ve now seen the ultimate flip flop,” said Adam Schefter of the NFL Network. He was referring, of course, to the team’s assertion all offseason up until today that Rodgers would be the unquestioned starter.
Perhaps I’m being a bit of a sap in saying this, but what disturbs me a bit is the attention this has taken away not so much from a reasonably unimportant preseason game Sunday night but from a weekend that should be focused on the six inductees into the Hall of Fame.
That said, and since it is the news of the day, for a team that expects to compete for the Super Bowl – or should, based on last season anyway – I think allowing for a quarterback competition would be the right move. I would bet 100 times out of 100 that Favre gives the team a better chance to return to and go deep into the playoffs.
I remain skeptical that the competition is really the team’s intention, however. My sense is that it’s subterfuge – an effort to give the team more time to explore trade options and perhaps increase his value a bit. My best guess is that Favre still ends up in New York or Tampa.
Just my opinion.
I believe the buying time strategy, but what of the reports that #4 has zero interest in going to NY or Tampa? The “competition” story is rather absurd. If Brett had been out for a few years, then maybe. But is there really any contest?
Unless the competition is some plot hatched by the Packers to rig things in Rodgers’ favor. When Aaron walks away with the Vicodin-eating contest we’ll know the thing is bogus.
