The chili is in the crock pot. The logs will soon be ready for the fire. And the regular season is over. It’s time to separate the contenders from the pretenders. It’s time for playoff football.
It’s well documented that while our picks during the season were ok, our bets during the season were terrible. So even though we did ok with a different betting system for college bowl games, we decided to mix things up again for the NFL playoffs, given that there are fewer games to choose from. So, our picks are below. Let us know in comments who you think is going to win this week and who is likely to emerge with the Lombardi Trophy in a month. (more…)

In an effort to provide accountability – and because I’m sure all six of you who make a point of looking for our picks and bets every week are dying to know – we wanted to provide final regular tallies for our best bets and picks segments.
In week 17, our futility continued when it comes to betting. Andy and Tony both hit just one of four picks, though both of the correct ones were moneyline upset picks that, if bet right, might have kept us from going completely broke with our imaginary money.
The 1-3 tallies left Andy with a 30-37-1 record for the season. Tony tumbled to a 28-40 mark.
Our picks were markedly better. Andy finished out the season with a bang, going 13-3 in week 17. A 27-5 run the final two weeks upped his record to 166-89-1 for the season. Tony led most of the way but fell to 9-7 in week 16 and 10-6 in week 17 for a 161-94-1 mark.
I’d like to once again thank the team bloggers who participated in our celebrity pick segment every week. Their efforts resulted in a 158-97-1 mark for the season.
As this is a highly anticipated segment each week, we’ll probably come up with something for the playoffs too. Check back for details on that later.

As we’ve mentioned time and time again, our bets have sucked all season. We maybe had a two or three week stretch where it looked like things were coming around, but for the most part it’s a good thing our time in Vegas this season was limited to one three night stretch for Andy.
That said, we both did pretty well last week, recovering if only briefly from terrible stretches, posting 3-1 marks in week 16. That improves Andy’s record to 29-34-1. Tony rebounds from back-to-back 0-4 weeks, improving his season record to 27-37.
As we wrap up the regular season, here are our bets for week 17. Use these at your own risk:

I’m not sure if my brother feels this way, but for me, most seasons, there usually is a point where I feel like I’ve started to feel like I’m at least getting a hint for which teams are good, which are bad, which know how to go for the jugular and which are prone to bad upsets.
Not this year. I don’t have a flippin’ clue. It played out again last week in a 1-3 mark that dropped my best bets to 26-33-1 for the season. That sounds bad – and it is terrible. But it’s still actually ahead of my brother, who went 0-4 and hasn’t made a correct bet in this segment since week 14.
We are committed to playing this out for the season, but if we were really playing this out in Vegas, we’d either have been committed or we’d have been left lying in an alley with our legs broken multiple times.
On that upbeat note, happy holidays and here are our bets. (more…)

After the dreadful start we had to our betting season, I didn’t think our picks could get much uglier. We seemed to be on a bit of a roll heading into week 14, but last week everything went wrong.
Andy went 1-3, dropping his season record to 25-30-1. Tony did even worse, not connecting once, even picking Arizona to upset Seattle in a game the Cardinals ultimately lost 58-0.
It may be merciful that there are only three weeks left in the season. But we’re going to go down with a fight. On what is supposed to be the lucky day of 12/12/12, here goes for week 15.

Well, our bets for the season are still terrible–but a 4-0 week for Andy last week, combined with a ho-hum 2-2 week for me, puts us at 24-28 (Tony) vs. 24-27-1 (Andy) for the season. Maybe rather than following our betting advice, you can find a book in Vegas that will take action on our fierce battle?
This weeks picks:
