James fails physical, Vikes cut bait

When the Minnesota Vikings traded several draft choices to Kansas City for Jared Allen before the draft last month several experts made them the favorites to unseat Green Bay and win the NFC North.

While Allen improves the defense immensely it’s not like the team is loaded at defensive end. Besides Allen the team has Brian Robison, Ray Edwards, and Jayme Mitchell. Assuming a good result in his battle with leukemia, Kenechi Udeze will rejoin that group in 2009.

Bengals continue housecleaning, cut Thurman

Troubled Cincinnati linebacker Odell Thurman, reinstated last month after missing two seasons due to suspension, was cut by the Bengals Monday.

“The NFL provided Odell the opportunity to earn his way back onto our team, but we have not seen the right steps taken by him,” Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said in a statement. “With our offseason work in progress and new talent added at our linebacker position, we’ve determined it’s best to keep moving in a direction that does not include Odell.” (more…)

Bengals get one 2005 pick back, lose one forever, then challenge another vet to sit out

The Cincinnati Bengals gained back one thug, err, linebacker, Tuesday afternoon while losing another to retirement. Coach Marvin Lewis told another hooligan to hold out if he wants to.

Media reports indicate that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reinstated Odell Thurman, who sat out the last two seasons, giving the multiple violator of the substance abuse policy another chance. (more…)

Alexander passes physical, gets cut

Just over two years ago the Seattle Seahawks gave Shaun Alexander, who was coming off of an MVP season, a $62 million contract. Two injury-plagued, underachieving seasons later the ‘Hawks gave him his walking papers.

Following the signings of Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett, and coach Mike Holmgren’s reticence to use Alexander down the stretch last season, Alexander’s release is no surprise.
Alexander, according to the Associated Press, said he is healthy and “looking forward to the next chapter of my NFL career,”

Still, it’s a stunning fall from grace for the 30-year-old running back who helped his team to the Super Bowl in 2005. So, where does he end up? And does it happen before the draft? Teams like the Lions, the Panthers and the Bears are definitely looking for running backs, at least for a platoon situation.

This situation could have an effect on the draft, the situation of a lot of ongoing free agents, and ultimately some fantasy drafts as well.
