Skipping the not so voluntary voluntaries

Not sure if it’s a big deal or not but several upper-echelon players are skipping out on their teams’ off-season workouts this spring. While the workouts are voluntary there’s always been a sort of unspoken less-than-voluntary-ness to the way coaches talk about these gatherings. Despite the possibility of angering coaches, in all likelihood only a couple of them will have much impact.

Steelers playing in Toronto

Pittsburgh will travel to Toronto in August to play a preseason game against Buffalo, one of eight games the Bills will play at the Rogers Centre over the next five seasons.

The Steelers last played in Ontario in 1960 when they defeated the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League in a preseason game, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The Bills received permission from the NFL to schedule five regular season games and three preseason games in Toronto over the next five seasons, a move some Buffalo fans fear could mean a franchise relocation in time.

The league claims it helps to provide the Bills with regionalization and a stronger fan base, the story claims, though it’s hard to think that the larger city and the nicer venue wouldn’t be attractive to the league.

At some point Toronto would have to be considered a potential home base for some team, whether through expansion or relocation. It beats the hell out of most American cities without franchises, including Los Angeles, which has seen three previous efforts at supporting a team fail.

Tatupu sleeping in Seattle

Lofa Tatupu landed a $42 million contract extension that will keep him in Seattle through 2015. Media reports indicate that four teammates restructured deals primarily so the team could re-sign Tatupu, who would have become a free agent after 2009.

About $18 million is guaranteed.

Reports also indicate that the Seahawks might be close to terminating the contract of RB Shaun Alexander. The team signed T.J. Duckett and Julius Jones early in free agency, making Alexander’s future in the city appear bleak.

The Seahawks have won the NFC West four years in a row.

Lotta legal run-ins again

Players seem to be forgetting that Commissioner Roger Goodell is cracking down on misbehavior. ProFootballTalk.com does a nice job of keeping up on its Turd Watch.

And the site has had plenty to keep busy in recent weeks.

Favre love-fest continues

The Wisconsin Legislature passed a resolution honoring three-time MVP quarterback Brett Favre.

If you haven’t heard, Favre retired last week after 16 seasons with the Pack.
Rep. Phil Montgomery, who met wife Deanna Favre while campaigning in 1998 and Favre himself a few years later during a push for public money for Lambeau Field renovations, was the chief sponsor of the bill, according to the Associated Press.

Montgomery for legislators how Madam Favre told him she didn’t need his campaign literature because she votes in Mississippi and how Lord Favre would attend high school football games and pass out leaflets about the renovations.

It was unclear from the story whether Montgomery recommended starting the process for pushing canonizing Favre for sainthood. Nor did the AP story determine whether Montgomery would campaign for Favre to enter the NFL Hall of Fame as a Green Bay Packer. Sources say there may be an underground movement underway to have him inducted as an Atlanta Falcon.

Osgood to boycott off-season workouts? Really?

The San Diego Union Tribune reported today that special teams demon Kassim Osgood might boycott off-season workouts if he doesn’t think he’s getting an opportunity to play wide receiver.

Kassim Osgood?

Really?

He’s a fine special teams player – a Pro Bowler, no doubt. But some of these guys, hint, hint, might want to take a closer look at the amount of money they make to step onto the field eight to 10 times a game and consider whether or not they want to risk that paycheck by, frankly, being idiots.
