If you’re looking for assistance on your NFL Survivor Pool, we’ve got you covered … at least kind of.
Our four writers are playing a slightly modified version to help you make your weekly decisions. Well, three of us are. Even though we’re giving ourselves two strikes instead of one, Tony had a rough go of it the first two weeks. Despite leading our overall NFL Picks segment, two of the games he missed were Survivor Pool choices.
So the three remaining among us will attempt to help you make your weekly decisions, and hopefully we’ll all make it through Week 17 unscathed. Whoever’s left standing at the end will be declared the winner.
Two of us head into week three 2-0 … unfortunately not me. I was bit by Chicago’s improbable comeback win over San Francisco in the opener out west. So I’m 1-1. John and Maggio are 2-0, having respectively ridden Denver and Green Bay to victory.
There was a lot of carnage in the NFL this weekend and it didn’t all happen on the field.
Several upsets – at least in how we picked the games, anyway – dotted the landscape, sending spiraling a picks segment that going back a few years has generally been fairly solid.
Fantasy Editor Anthony Maggio led the way this time around with an 8-8 record, to give you a sense for how bad things got. Weekly guest picker Dr. Phil got roughed up a bit too, going 7-9 – but he remains a game behind Tony for the overall lead after two weeks at 18-14.
Here are the standings through two weeks:
Name
Week 2
Overall
Tony
7-9
19-13
Maggio
8-8
17-15
Andy
7-9
17-15
John Vomhof Jr
6-10
16-16
We’re shaking our heads and licking our wounds, but we’re getting back on the bicycle and taking another crack – while we wait to find out when superstars like A.J.Green and Jamaal Charles will return from injuries and ponder whether or not Adrian Peterson should be dressing this weekend for the purple.
Last minute comebacks, upsets, meltdowns and questionable coaching decisions dotted the Sunday and Monday NFL landscapes. It’s great to have football back again.
Given the weirdness that took place last weekend, particularly at the end of some of the early games, I’d say we came out of the weekend relatively intact. Nobody embarrassed themselves too badly and Tony, who thrives on picking the unpredictable, nailed the week with a 12-4 mark. He’s in control of the leader board after one week. Dr. Phil from the audience also made picks last week – if my count is right, he hit an 11-5 mark — maybe he should join the staff.
Playing in an NFL Survivor Pool? Zoneblitz has you covered. Our four writers are playing a slightly modified version to help you make your weekly decisions, and hopefully we’ll all make it through Week 17 unscathed. However, in our version, we’re giving each writer ONE strike to make things more interesting. Whoever’s left standing at the end will be declared the winner.
So take in our thoughts, ponder them yourself and then vote below on who you think made the best pick. If you don’t like any of them tell us who you’d pick.
Andy: Philadelphia over Jacksonville
Would I rather hang onto the Eagles for later in the season when they are playing some of their below average divisional foes? Sure. But in a one-and-done (or in this case, two-and-done) format, heading into what is usually the most unpredictable of professional sports, having Philadelphia host an improving-but-still-not-very-good Jacksonville team seems like as sure a thing as you can get.
Maggio: NY Jets over Oakland
The Oakland Raiders are trotting out a rookie quarterback on the road against a Rex Ryan defense? Yes, please! I’m no Jets fan, but I’m certainly a fan of (hopefully) saving some of the big-name teams for later in the season. J-E-T-S DON’T-EMBARRASS-ME!
John: NY Jets over Oakland
When in doubt, just pick whoever plays Oakland. The Raiders are my preseason pick for the NFL’s worst roster, and this week they’re starting rookie QB Derek Carr behind a revamped offensive line on the road in the Big Apple. (Plus, a Jets win this week lets you save the heavy hitters for later in the season.)
Tony: Chicago over Buffalo
The Bills are so concerned about EJ Manual that they paid Kyle Orton $5 million to come in and be their insurance policy. And that’s a policy that I would be shocked if they don’t cash in by midseason. They have a potential running game, but unless they’re running the wishbone, three running backs won’t help. Meanwhile, the Bears look to have one of the best passing attacks in the league (again), and a coach that made Josh McCown look good—no telling what he can do in his second year with a talent like Cutler at the helm (as long as he can keep Cutler’s head on straight).
I’m a Minnesotan. Over the last week, the only sports headline that has come close to competing with the many Kevin Love trade rumors is the lawsuit filed by former Vikings punter Chris Kluwe against his former team.
Without going into every detail, Kluwe’s case deals with claims that his special teams coach, Mike Priefer, created a hostile work environment by saying things such as: “put all gay people on an island and nuke them until it glows.”
The Vikings coach denied it several times, but once it was corroborated by current Vikings player then Priefer admitted it. He was suspended by the Vikings for three games, which will be reduced to two if he completes sensitivity training.
Sticking with the NFL (this does lead to MLB, I promise), the league came out Thursday with its punishment for Baltimore Ravens star running back Ray Rice, busted during the off-season for dragging his unconscious girlfriend out of an elevator (this is on video).
The NFL slapped Rice on the wrist with a two-game suspension for domestic violence. This is half the punishment that Rice would have received had he used performance enhancing drugs. These penalties, respectively for Priefer and Rice, make a mockery of both domestic violence and gay bashing. (more…)

Brian i could 100% see that in terms of anderson being the next senior elected by the hall of fame…
Malcolm Butler for ruining my 16th birthday Russell Wilson for throwing out his loyalties and Arthur Blank for trading Matt…
Why would you be upset with Butler, Wilson and Blank, Andy?
