ZoneBlitz Picks – Getting Back on Track

OK, so two weeks ago we delayed posting our picks–and finally won some money.  So last week we did it again–and didn’t fair so well.  And ended up not posting them at all–although we did have them done.

This week, we were so busy trying to make a last second trade in Fantasy Football–a trade that didn’t happen, and may have cost us a win this week (since a couple of the players being discussed killed us Thursday night)–that we forgot to make our spread picks until this morning.

So here’s a two week update:

Week 8 Picks (Finally) – In the $$!!

After a lengthy delay, here are the picks we made last week.  In a twist of fate, the week that we delayed posting them, we actually went out and finished in third place in our ranking pool–netting us some cash back (not quite the entry fee–but if we finish third or higher again, we’ll be covered for the year).  We finished the week with just a 104–but we climbed to 30th overall for the year.

Head to head, I’ll have to get caught up on.  But as for Week 9 picks…well, we’re not the most superstitious people in the world–but we figured why screw with what’s worked, so we’ve made our picks early again, but plan on holding off on publishing them for now.

2009 NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame Candidates Announced

The initial list of candidates for the NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2009 was announced Tuesday.  Included on the list were 110 players, seven coaches, and 16 contributors to the game.

Amongst the players are first-year candidates Bruce Smith, Shannon Sharpe and Rod Woodson.  Amongst the contributors are former commissioner Paul Tagliabue, and long time owners Ralph Wilson and Bud Adams.

The list will be cut down to 25 semifinalists next month, and then further reduced to 15 finalists by a mail vote, before the final 15 plus two senior candidates (Bob Hayes and Claude Humphrey) will be considered and duing the leadup to the Super Bowl.  This will mark the first year that up to seven people can be chosen.

To see what we (and a group of dedicated commentors) think will play out for the 2009 Pro Football Hall of Fame class, follow this link.

Picks: Update & Week 7

While the posting here at ZoneBlitz has admittedly slowed, we are still at least getting our picks up each week, so we’ve got that going for us.  And this week, I finally found the time to add up where we’ve been the last few weeks.

In our ranked pick ’em game, we had a brutal week last week, with our 80 dropping us 27 spots to 56th place for the season.  In our head to head draft, based on our ranked picks, I had substantially closed the gap between Andy and myself with back-to-back 6-2 weeks, before dropping a game back last week.  Going into Week 7, Andy leads by four games–32-15 to 28-19.

Straight up, we’re in a similar situation–we both finished an ugly 6-8 last week, and for the season Andy leads by five games, 56-32 to 51-37.

Against the spread–which we’ve kind of determined is stupid, since we would never bet all games anyway, is the one place where I’ve gotten the better of him–largely thanks to a 10-4 Week 5.  I lead 42-29-1 to 40-31-1.

As for Week 7:

Mangini Names Son after Brett Favre

New York Jets coach Eric Mangini’s wife gave birth to their third son Friday.  Apparently fulfilling a promise made by Mangini to Brett Favre while convincing him to join the Jets earlier this year, the child was named Zack Brett, joining thousands of parents in Wisconsin that made a similar mistake.

Even more ironic–Friday was also Favre’s birthday.

But, we have to wonder what Mangini will think of having a son named Brett when Favre is throwing picks late in the season.  Or knocking the Jets out of the playoffs.

Or playing his “Yes I will, No I won’t” retirement game again this offseason.
