When New Orleans traded Darren Sproles to Philadelphia this offseason it opened up the pass catching RB role, most likely for Pierre Thomas. It’s unclear as of now how the entire RB situation will play out, as it has looked during the preseason like Mark Ingram will get a shot to be an early-down guy and New Orleans also obviously likes Khiry Robinson.
But the Saints also love throwing the ball and Thomas’ skills in that area easily trump the Ingram/Robinson duo, meaning Pierre will see the field plenty.
So what is his upside potential? That’s a largely unanswered question entering the season.
I hear a lot of people saying Pierre Thomas is going to give up the role he has had in New Orleans’ offense in recent years to take on the Darren Sproles-role in 2014. That’s being said largely as an argument for why Thomas warrants less fantasy momentum than in years past. I say baloney. (more…)
Jaguars wideout Cecil Shorts has 121 catches and 10 TDs over the last two seasons – certainly not a WR1 in fantasy football, but no slouch, either. Shorts’ Jaguars have been among the league’s laughingstocks in recent years, but showed the second half of 2013 that they might be headed in the right direction.
Now the remaining question is what role does Shorts play as the Jags continue their efforts at a turnaround? Does he become the top target while rookies learn and Justin Blackmon tries to convince the league to reinstate him? Or do rookies Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson usurp his looks?
Cecil Shorts made his preseason debut on Friday against the Lions. I’m hoping his absence due to a hamstring injury is what’s been keeping his ADP depressed—but if not, it’s a buying opportunity for those paying attention. Sure, the Jacksonville passing game isn’t going to be mistaken for the 2013 Denver Broncos, but that hasn’t stopped Shorts from being productive in the past. (more…)
Tom Brady has long been a cornerstone for fantasy franchises, a QB you could count on to put up top three or four numbers. But he’s getting up there in age and his once full cupboard of weapons is now, for reasons ranging from homicide to injury to age, somewhat bare. That said, he still put up more than 4,000 yards passing and threw 25 TDs in a year in which he lost for all or part of the season Aaron Hernandez, Wes Welker, Rob Gronkowski, Shane Vereen and others. Figuring out how to balance these factors make him one of the trickier players to peg heading into 2014.
It’s easy to look at Tom Brady’s final 2013 stats and his age—he’s 37—and after taking a gander at the other shiny objects at the quarterback position write him off and forget about him.
But you can’t look objectively at last year and simply assume Brady’s decline has begun. Danny Amendola, Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson all played only 12 games for various reasons, Vereen played in just eight, and Gronkowski was present for seven. So what did Brady do? He took a four-year backup in Julian Edelman and turned him into a 1,000-yard receiver. (more…)
Experts saw great things coming from the Calvin Johnson/Reggie Bush tandem in 2013. And they weren’t completely wrong. But by season’s end it was Joique Bell, not Bush, who was the more oft-used back.
Yet despite that, Bush is going off the board as the 15th running back in fantasy drafts at ESPN while Bell is languishing as the RB 26. The workload breakdown this year has yet to be determined. Will Bell continue earning carries away from the more heralded teammate? Or will Bell fade back into a secondary role as the Lions move forward with a new offensive coordinator?
Step forward if you led the Lions backfield in receiving yards and rushing touchdowns in 2013. Not so fast, Reggie Bush. It was, in fact, Joique Bell who accomplished both feats, finishing just a reception shy of the pass-catching whiz in Scott Linehan’s offense. (more…)
T.Y. Hilton recently told Indianapolis media that the Colts have three number one receivers this season – him, Reggie Wayne and Hakeem Nicks. That’s unquestionably true about Wayne and Hilton and Nicks both have shown flashes of that kind of ability in the past. But Hilton, heading into his third season, also disappeared in many games last season, despite being the unquestioned top WR after Reggie Wayne injured his knee. So, does he step up in year three and become a true number one force? Or was 2013 the ceiling?
Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton has already intimated that Indy may throw more this year. Hell, he’s going to be forced into it if Ahmad Bradshaw can’t stay healthy and Trent Richardson continues to suck—neither of which would come as a surprise. (more…)
