Just because you drafted one of the top 12 quarterbacks doesn’t mean your guy is necessarily one of the 12 best plays every week. Cam Newton, Eli Manning, and Russell Wilson owners are the first to fall victim to tough matchups, though in most cases you’re likely starting them anyway. I certainly wouldn’t argue as a “don’t bench your studs” proponent, though quarterback is so deep this year that if you waited and then nabbed a couple of guys in the 10 to 15 range, playing the matchup every week. For instance, those who drafted Michael Vick are delighted to throw him in against a Washington defense that allowed the third most passing yards last season.

Q1A: Start Dallas defense, which looked phenomenal during preseason, or Tampa Bay vs. NY Jets week 1?
A: I’m inclined to go with Tampa Bay. While the Cowboys are at home against a Giants offense with some health and offensive line concerns, the Bucs have too juicy of a matchup. Despite the Jets’ recent struggles they still could run the ball last year, but Tampa’s run defense was best in the league. Yes, its pass defense was atrocious, but the Bucs signed Derrelle Revis in the offseason and New York can’t throw the ball anyway.
Q1B: To pick up a defense I need to drop someone. Here are my options: Mike Williams, Alshon Jeffery, Le’veon Bell, Bernard Pierce, Jared Cook, Zach Sudfeld or Joique Bell. I lean Joique Bell…
A: You left your draft without a defense? All the leagues I’m in require you to be able to fill out a starting roster by the end of the draft. Anyway, I think you’re probably safest dropping Joique there. He’s the least likely to be scooped up right away should you want to get him back. Though if you have Reggie Bush, then you may actually want to drop Sudfeld or Jeffery depending on your depth at WR/TE and who is available at those positions on the waiver wire.
Q2: Another owner has expressed interest in Eddie Lacy. It would seem that WR would be my most upgradeable position—he’s got Randall Cobb, Lance Moore, Rueben Randle and Tavon Austin. He also has Charles, Ball, Giovani Bernard, Tate and Bryce Brown. You see any potential deals that would even strike a chord? I’m leaning towards holding on to him unless it was a blockbuster. None of his receivers excite me much, and Bernard is the only back that super excites me.
A: The only guy two guys on that list who I’d accept as a 1-to-1 return for Lacy would be Cobb or Charles. Unless the other owner is a big Packers fan, though, my guess is that Charles would be off the table. If your own RB depth can handle the hit and the other owner’s interested, then definitely pull the trigger for Cobb. I like Bernard, but Lacy’s got far more potential this season without a BenJarvus Green-Ellis to steal work all season.

As promised in my fantasy team foundation story earlier this week, it’s time to take a somewhat deeper dive into my 2013 draft strategy. Position by postion, I’ll tell you what I’m doing and why.
Quarterbacks
A few weeks ago I stumbled upon a piece at TheHuddle.com that provided incredibly in-depth research to crystallize and validate my thoughts on how to treat quarterbacks not only this season, but in all seasons. I believe you need a site membership (along with about 45 minutes) to read the piece, but I’ll sum it up for you: wait on quarterbacks. The basic philosophy behind this is that while there is a difference between the best quarterback and the No. 10 or 12 quarterback (low-end starter), the difference is not nearly as great as the difference between the high end and low end starters at RB, WR and TE, in order from greatest to smallest ranges. And to steal a stat from fantasy guru Ryan Boser, who knocked our Mock Draft out of the park on Tuesday (to be posted later this week), he noted via Twitter (@Ryan_Boser) that in 2003, the top three quarterbacks averaged 22.3 fantasy points per game, with six quarterbacks averaging over 20 points per game. In 2012, the elite quarterbacks upped their average to 26.1 points per game, but a whopping 15 averaged more than 20. Are those extra 4-5 points worth 6-8 rounds of draft position? Absolutely not.
Now this doesn’t necessarily mean wait until the very end of your draft to get a quarterback, though it could. What I’m ultimately doing is waiting on quarterbacks until the value is amazing—basically more than a round of difference between ADP and the position I’d be taking them—or grabbing quarterbacks just prior to teams starting to take backup QBs. The latter is a bit tricky as you can never truly know who will dive into those waters first, but as a general rule anyone with a top five or six quarterback is likely to wait on a backup because they are making up for the earlier pick they used on the position. So basically once the Andrew Lucks and Colin Kaepernicks are called, I’m looking at my draft position and who still needs quarterbacks. Then I’m pairing up high-upside guys; and there are plenty I like. In fact, there are 18 quarterbacks that if I had any two of them (obviously which two depend on how the draft went) I’d be totally comfortable with heading into the season. If the top-end guys do fall, I’m only taking one QB and worrying about the bye week later.
Running Backs (more…)
by Anthony Maggio | Aug 11, 2013 | Fantasy Football
Draft strategy comes with many theories. You’ve certainly been told to take a running back with your first two picks regardless. You’ve undoubtedly heard to forego running backs entirely for three or four rounds, instead stocking up on elite wide receivers, tight ends and quarterbacks.
Want a foolproof plan? Here it is: Have backup plans.
The biggest mistake you can make going into a draft is having a plan. It makes you inflexible, and unable to take advantages of the market swings as the draft goes. With that in mind, I’ve put together three 12-team, four-round mock drafts to show how the foundation of your team will look when drafting in different spots and trying different options. Each draft uses ADP values as of August 8 at myfantasyleague.com. The parameters of each specific draft are listed above each of them.

This is just your basic draft going by ADP, without overloading at any position in the first four rounds. The teams I like best picked first, fifth and 10th, though I’d have taken Ridley over David Wilson if not going straight ADP. I like these teams because they didn’t take a QB in the first four picks and got two high-upside runners in the first four rounds—although in a non-PPR (ADP takes all formats into account) I’m a little less psyched about Witten in the fourth round. The teams I had the most problems with were at second, fourth and sixth. The team with the second pick went back-to-back question marks with DeMarco Murray and Reggie Wayne in rounds three and four—Murray who has struggled to stay healthy, and Wayne who’ll get far fewer targets this season. The team that picked sixth took a QB in the second round, which I flat out wouldn’t do regardless of circumstance. Following that up with Darren McFadden, who gets lumped in with Murray as a guy who has largely disappointed fantasy owners in his career, is rough. Then throw in Marques Colston as that squad’s No. 1 receiver and that leaves WR as the position of need in the next two rounds, when there also needs to be some McFadden insurance purchased sooner than later. The fourth team I don’t have as much problem with as the first two, but I still don’t love Frank Gore as my No. 1 runner, and again there’s the quarterback drafted with an early third round pick.

This was specifically to show what going against the RB/RB theory would look like from the seventh spot, while going RB/RB near the turn. Now this plays out a little different in ADP in the fact that Calvin Johnson is already off the board, but again you see like in the last mock what a team would start like when taking Calvin early on and then not focusing at all on running backs. Like last time, I’m not a fan in that Brees is taken in the third round. The WR/WR setup for the team with the seventh overall pick isn’t bad, but this ADP skews a bit WR heavy early, so the next one might be more indicative of what that approach would look like.

If your draftmates are RB-centric, then you’ve got a much better case for going WR/WR or WR/TE depending on where you’re at. However, there are enough running backs that I like where there are very few scenarios where I wouldn’t take a RB with one of my first two picks. The teams with the last two picks of the first round turned out pretty well, though the Adrian Peterson-led squad is my favorite out of this bunch.
Overall you can’t judge a fantasy team by the first four rounds, but these building blocks set the stage for how the rest of a draft will play out. So, what’s my plan(s)? Fair question.
Ultimately it depends on where I’m drafting, but staying flexible is the overriding theme. I’ll get into a little more detailed draft strategy in a later post, but here are the Cliff’s Notes…
– Wait on QBs until value is amazing or just prior to teams starting to take backup QBs (especially on the turn where you’re susceptible to positional runs).
– At least one RB in the first two rounds, and almost exclusively RBs in rounds five through eight if I leave the first four rounds with just one RB. This could happen, because…
– WR value is pretty solid in those early/mid rounds, with the Colstons, Victor Cruzes and Wes Welkers of the world.
– I’ll take a TE around ADP if that TE is Jimmy Graham or Rob Gronkowski. Otherwise I’ll wait until near the end of my draft and grab who’s left of the guys in my 10-25 range of my cheat sheet who’s upside I like.
– Grab a kicker in the last round.
– Grab a defense in the second to last round.
If you want the Cliff’s Notes to the Cliff Notes, then just remember two words: be flexible.
