Nobody questioned Allen Robinson’s ability coming off of a 48 catch, injury-plagued rookie season in 2014. There were debates, however, over his ultimate upside heading into 2015 – including one right here on this website.
Robinson answered those questions with an exclamation point, posting gaudy 80-1,400-14 stat line and making the Pro Bowl in his sophomore season, landing him as the fourth highest scoring fantasy receiver ahead of darlings like Odell Beckham and DeAndre Hopkins.
So was that Robinson’s peak? Will injury concerns return? Or is this just the tip of the iceberg for the talented product of Penn State?
Devonta Freeman was an afterthought in many fantasy drafts at the start of the 2015 season. But he ended the year as the overall RB1, tallying a jaw-dropping 1,639 total yards and 14 TDs.
He was particularly strong through the first seven weeks of the season, posting four 100 yard rushing games and posting two games in which he rushed for three TDs.
The second half of his season wasn’t as strong, however. When the Falcons fell apart, so did his production. Can Freeman step it up again in 2016? Or will the 2014 season and the second half of 2015 prove to be more accurate portrayals of who he is as a player?
Editor’s Note: The end of the 2015 season does not put football to bed. Now is the time to start examining what you did right and what you did wrong, so you don’t repeat mistakes in 2016. We’ll be taking a look at several players whose seasons surprised us and analyzing whether they are an indication of what is to come – Fact – or an aberration – Fantasy.
When Jordy Nelson got hurt during the preseason, everyone knew the offensive task for Green Bay would be more difficult during the 2015 season. But none of the projections I saw projected the degree to which the Packers would struggle.
Aaron Rodgers‘ quarterback rating dropped from 112.2 to 92.7, nearly 20 points, which was his lowest output since becoming a starter. His yardage count dropped by more than 500 yards and he threw just 31 TDs, down from 38 in 2014.
So were injuries the crux of Rodgers’ falloff? Will he regain his status as a top two fantasy QB in 2016? Or are the problems he and the rest of the offense suffered through last season a sign of things to come?
John: Fact
Aaron Rodgers went from fantasy stud to average Joe this season, finishing as the QB9, bunched up with other fantasy stalwarts such as Kirk Cousins and Ryan Fitzpatrick. Not exactly the output fantasy owners were hoping to get from a second-round pick. (more…)
For the first time in nine seasons, San Francisco will have a new feature back. Second-year RB Carlos Hyde replaces long-time vet Frank Gore, who left for Indianapolis in the offseason.
Last year’s second-round pick groomed for the job last year, scoring four times on 83 carries and producing a 4.0 yards per carry clip.
Can Hyde provide a younger, fresher version of Gore? Or will taking on the main role for the 49ers prove to be too much of a gig for this youngster to handle?
The New Orleans Saints drafted Brandin Cooks in the first round of the 2014 draft and immediately plugged him into a significant role in the offense.
Cooks snagged 53 passes and three TDs in 10 games before an injury ended his season. The Saints have significantly changed their offense and Cooks stands to be the biggest beneficiary, if he can handle the role, through the air.
Will he take his game up a level? Or will the pressure of the number one WR role and the likelihood of a more balanced pass/run ratio scuttle his climb to the top of fantasy rankings?
