It’s fitting that last week was Thanksgiving because we gambled like a bunch of turkeys.
After discovering the mathematical error that had been artificially pumping up our respective bankrolls for 12 weeks, we found out we had much less to work with than originally thought. And now those wallets are even lighter.
I hit one of my games, so I salvaged a bit of a brutal week, but my brother missed all four of his predictions, dropping his bankroll from positive to negative for the first time in several weeks. Here’s where we stand:
Well, the end of week 13 put us three-quarters of the way through the season. As we head toward the home stretch, we all seem to be at least semi-catching on to what the NFL looks like in 2013.
Two of us hit 12 and the other two of us got 10 of 16 games correct. While there is some separation between the top and bottom of our standings, each of us is holding our own throughout the long, strange trip the NFL season typically becomes.
Here are the standings after week 13:
Week 13
Season
Andy
10-6
126-65-1
Tony
12-4
123-68-1
Maggio
10-6
116-75-1
Rich
12-4
112-79-1
Now that I’ve bragged up our proficiency, we’ll undoubtedly run into a weekend in which three quarters of the game end up in upsets. It happens all the time. Just when you start to think you’ve got things figured out …
So, here’s who we think will win in week 14: (more…)
The bad news is that, at least from a picks standpoint, week 12 was a bloodbath. None of us fared particularly well and Rich had an especially tough week. The good news is that bye weeks are over and it’s Thanksgiving, so we’re about 41 hours from kickoff for the early game, about 44 hours from my favorite meal of the year and about 45 hours from my afternoon nap, which will take place during the afternoon game.
So, anyway, back to football. Fantasy guru Anthony Maggio started his rally this week. He gained a couple games in the standings. The rest of us, well, we can only wish. Here are the standings heading into lucky week 13.
Week 12
Season totals
Andy
6-7-1
116-59-1
Tony
7-6-1
111-64-1
Maggio

Rich

100-75-1
Despite our less than stellar picks, the schedule for last week was filled with great games, at least on paper, from top to bottom. Some of the games played out as expected, others were fantastic and fascinating to watch – such as the Broncos/Patriots tilt, which happened to be our Game of the Week.
While there are a couple of pretty good games on the schedule for the week, there are a few duds. The Thanksgiving slate is somewhat underwhelming, though I’m okay with that – more time for eating and snoozing.
At 9 a.m. central time, Anthony Maggio will be on 1500 ESPN talking fantasy football for an hour. You can stream that audio here. He’ll then stick around and conduct a chat at the website 1500espn.com.
You can tweet him questions at #1500blitz or @mplsmaggio. He gets to a lot of them on the show and hits the chat hard.
And of course you can find his player rankings here on Zoneblitz.com.
Six coaches and contributors are among the 25 finalists in the running for induction in the 2014 class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Super Bowl winning coaches Tony Dungy and Jimmy Johnson join Eddie DeBartolo Jr., George Young, Paul Tagliabue and Don Coryell as semifinalists.
The list’s next most prominent role is the position of pass rusher, where five men who played linebacker, defensive line or a hybrid between the two moved on to the next round.
Among the prominent first-time candidates are wide receiver Marvin Harrison, tackle Walter Jones and linebacker Derrick Brooks. Harrison joins long-time finalists Andre Reed and Tim Brown at the receiver position where, until Cris Carter was inducted this year, Reed, Brown and Carter each received enough support where their votes seemed to cancel each other out.
Other areas of intrigue are on the offensive line, where newcomer Walter Jones and returning semifinalist Will Shields are strong contenders for enshrinement, and safety, where Steve Atwater and John Lynch move to the next step at a position where voters have not inducted many previous candidates.
