Well, the draft is a distant memory, training camps are over. Our long national nightmare …
Well, okay, that’s a bit of a stretch. But we are about to get underway with the 2015 season – kickoff is about 10 hours away. So here we go with our obligatory Power Rankings. It’s the first one we’ve done since February. We’ll update this periodically throughout the season so be sure to check back for more.
And tell us who you think we are overrating or underrating. These power rankings should at least be good as a conversation piece, no?
Rank | Team | 2014 Record | Notes |
| Seattle Seahawks | 12-4 | The Seahawks were one play away from winning back-to-back Super Bowls, and, when Kam Chancellor shows up, all of their star players are back for 2015. Plus, they added a couple intriguing offensive pieces in Jimmy Graham and Tyler Lockett. |
| New England Patriots | 12-4 | The defending champs will be tough to beat again this year, especially with Tom Brady avoiding suspension. But, honestly, I’m still more worried about the post-Revis secondary than I ever was about Deflategate. |
| Indianapolis Colts | 11-5 | Andrew Luck makes this team an instant title contender, and I like the additions of Frank Gore, Andre Johnson and Phillip Dorsett. They Colts will score a ton of points — and they better because this D is still suspect. |
| Green Bay Packers | 12-4 | Losing Jordy Nelson is a big blow, but Aaron Rodgers and the offense should still be able to rack up points. The defense remains somewhat suspect under Dom Capers. |
| Denver Broncos | 12-4 | Peyton Manning showed some signs of breaking down late last season, but that also helped breathe life into the running game and the defense is legit. |
| Baltimore Ravens | 10-6 | I’m not sure the Ravens actually finish the year this high, but they’ve been as consistently solid as any club in the league in recent years. |
| Pittsburgh Steelers | 11-5 | The Steelers might score 30-plus points per game this year behind Big Ben, Le’veon Bell and Antonio Brown. The D isn’t great, but it should be serviceable. |
| Philadelphia Eagles | 10-6 | I might be drinking the Chip Kelly Kool-Aid, but I like this squad. Sam Bradford can be a solid QB when healthy, the running game is locked and loaded with DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews, and the defense is better with Kiko Alonso and Byron Maxwell. |
| Arizona Cardinals | 11-5 | Todd Bowles left for New York, but the defense should still be top-notch. And Bruce Arians should be able to get plenty of production out of Carson Palmer and the WR trio of Larry Fitzgerald, John Brown and Michael Floyd. |
| Dallas Cowboys | 12-4 | I’m not as high on Dallas as many others. I’m concerned about how the loss of DeMarco Murray is going to change the entire identity of this team. Last year, the running game drove the club’s success on both sides of the ball. |
| Kansas City Chiefs | 9-7 | The Chiefs certainly aren’t sexy, but they surprised me last year and could very well do so again in 2015. Alex Smith is a better real-life quarterback than he gets credit for in today’s stats-driven NFL, and I really like the addition of Jeremy Maclin to this offense. |
| Cincinnati Bengals | 10-5-1 | This Bengals defense is offense is going to score points this year, with Jeremy Hill and A.J. Green leading the way. But Andy Dalton will continue to hold this club back. |
| Miami Dolphins | 8-8 | The Dolphins defense could be one of this year’s best following the additions of Ndamukung Suh. And the offense has some serious upside, with up-and-coming QB Ryan Tannehill, underrated Lamar Miller and a young receiver corps led by Jarvis Landry and Devante Parker. |
| Minnesota Vikings | 7-9 | I may be a Minnesota homer, but this club is clearly headed in the right direction. Mike Zimmer could get this defense into the NFL’s top 10 this year, and the offense could be sneaky good with Adrian Peterson opening things up for Teddy Bridgewater. |
| San Diego Chargers | 9-7 | The Chargers seem poised for yet another 8-8 or 9-7 season this year. They’re a solid team, but there isn’t a lot to get excited about here. |
| Detroit Lions | 11-5 | Matthew Stafford is overrated at QB, Calvin Johnson has struggled with injuries and the defense lost Suh. This is a team poised to regress. |
| Buffalo Bills | 9-7 | Rex Ryan should be able to hold things together on defense and, despite being a fantasy football punching bag this offseason, LeSean McCoy adds an element to this offense. But do we really think Tyrod Taylor is the answer at QB? |
| Houston Texans | 9-7 | J.J. Watt might be the NFL’s most dominant defensive lineman since Reggie White, and it will be interesting to see what Jadeveon Clowney can bring to the table. But this club still doesn’t have a QB. |
| Atlanta Falcons | 6-10 | The Falcons aren’t great, but I think they’ll end up on top of the lackluster NFC South. The offense will score points with Matty Ice and Julio Jones, and Dan Quinn will provide a boost for the defense. |
| New Orleans Saints | 7-9 | Drew Brees is starting to decline a bit and the loss of Jimmy Graham will completely change the look of this offense. As for the defense… Well, it’s still not good. |
| Carolina Panthers | 7-8-1 | The Panthers defense looked great down the stretch last year, but it’s hard to get excited about an offense with so few weapons. |
| New York Jets | 4-12 | I’m wondering if I might actually be too low on the Jets. Todd Bowles is going to have a very good defense, especially with the addition of Darrelle Revis. Quarterback is an issue, but Chris Ivory, Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker are solid weapons. |
| St. Louis Rams | 6-10 | The Rams have a top-5 defense, but the offense is still a mess. Nick Foles is a middling talent and the offensive line is the worst in the league. |
| Jacksonville Jaguars | 3-13 | I think Gus Bradley is going to get the Jags’ defense to the next level, and I’m cautiously optimistic that the offense will take a step forward, too. Blake Bortles looked pretty decent in the preseason, I really like Allen Robinson and T.J. Yeldon can be a serviceable three-down RB. |
| New York Giants | 6-10 | Odell Beckham adds a major dose of excitement to this offense, but defense remains a major work in progress. I can’t name a single Giants safety — and I’m not sure Tom Coughlin can either. |
| Tampa Bay Buccaneers | 2-14 | The Bucs are still a ways away, but the Jameis Winston-Mike Evans combo is very intriguing on offense, and the defense actually has the talent to be pretty decent. |
| San Francisco 49ers | 8-8 | The 49ers suffered way too much turnover this offseason, with Jim Harbaugh heading to Michigan, Frank Gore to the Colts and three top defenders to retirement. |
| Cleveland Browns | 7-9 | The defense looked legit last year, and I love the addition of Danny Shelton. But the offense still has no quarterback and perhaps the worst NFL receiver corps in recent memory. |
| Chicago Bears | 5-11 | John Fox will shore up the defense, but it’s going to take some time. Jay Cutler remains a major question mark and the loss of top pick Kevin White hurts a lot. |
| Oakland Raiders | 3-13 | I’m actually sort of intrigued by this offense, with Derek Carr, Latavius Murray and Amari Cooper. But the defense? Outside of superstar Khalil Mack, it’s still pretty ugly. |
| Tennessee Titans | 2-14 | The Titans may very well have found the future face of the franchise in Marcus Mariota, but it’s going to take time to turn around this horrible team. |
| Washington Redskins | 4-12 | Washington is a train wreck. RG3 was a mess, but let’s not forget that Kirk Cousins has been a turnover machine, too, and the defense is awful. |
